3 Problems.

1. Display not working with KDE - Solved by following the advice on IRC and downloading fix-xorg7.sh

2. install-nvidia-debian.sh gives me an error about x-modules-path (logged on IRC - (bart), will recreate later today as I got over the problem by setting the driver to "nv" in the /etc/x11/xorg.conf file

3. bootup is considerably slower - but then I probably need to upgrade my hw Smilie

Hi Devil,

Just did, and it helped. The bootup time is back to normal. (Especially from the KDM Login).

On the NVidia script, I should have said I'm using the 7174 module, (older card) not the 8178 one that comes with CeBIT 2006.

The error message is:

Dist-upgraded yesterday... Results I posted here:

http://kanotix.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-17128.html

Just ran another dist-upgrade today (some other xorg file - common, I think) got installed) and also upgraded kernel to latest for good measure and:

1. Problem with firefox fixed (and gtk2 I guess)
2. Speed from nvidia screen to login screen, better. Screen refreshes, better.
3. Kano's script dumped a standard xorg.conf after kernel upgrade and nvidia install which stalled my mouse. I replaced xorg.conf with my original one and it's OK after init 3 and init 5.
4. For some reason firefox fonts in gnews got crappy - wonder why? Have always been OK. Anyway, apt-get install msttcorefonts and fix-fonts worked.

Like before, running fluxbox...

Dist-upgraded yesterday following Neuer User's instructions - absolutely no problems getting
Xorg7. Thanks, Neuer User, Kano, etc.
One small change: glxgears run in konsole no longer reported frames/sec.

Dist-upgrade today broke something with nvidia driver - attempting to run glxgears or
any of the OpenGL screensavers crashed my KDE session and sent me back to the login
screen. Rerunning the install-nvidia-debian script fixed the problem.

I have X but there are a couple of problems. I am using the 64 bit version with the updated source list but

startx is and unrecognized command and kdesu and sux do not work for giving access to x programs.
kedsu gives me WARNING: No X authentication info set for display :0.0
sux gives me /usr/bin/sux: line 213: xauth: command not found

I think this might be related to the fact that xbase-clients is still at 6.9 and has no new version avaible.

I've created a full upgrade script, you can download it and get full instructions on the xorg7-h2 upgrade page as well. This script integrates the kano fix-xorg7 into it, but has more features.

The script, if you choose all the options, will upgrade a vanilla 2005-4 or cebit rc 3 install to the latest xorg 7. Or it will just install xorg 7, do a dist-upgrade, then let you reinstall your nvidia or radeon graphics drivers.

Rather than have two versions of these instructions, just go the link above to get the full upto date instructions.

Make sure to check the forums for any warnings before doing a dist-upgrade, these are not super safe right now.

I updated my main box (32-bit Athlon CPU; nVidia card) by following devil28's instructions (before the warning not to dist-upgrade). All went well.

Notes: It's especially important to update the Kanotix scripts before reinstalling the nVidia driver, else it won't download a new one. Also, if you install the nVidia driver (which automatically starts X) before running "fix-fonts -e" and X won't start, running "fix-fonts -e" will fix the problem.

After the upgrade, bitmapped fonts are back in Firefox. (I haven't run "dpkg-reconfigure-fontconfig-config" yet.)

I had an X Cursor theme named Blue Glass 3D installed. Switching to it caused KDE to run with a black screen (nothing displayed except the kicker panel). Out it goes!

It would be interesting to know if there are any unnecessary files/directories left behind by the upgrade. It'd also be interesting to know when Xgl's gonna be in Sid!

I did my dist-upgrade without any wm running (telinit 3). tried devil's advice above...still no help. I was on the IRC channel last night, got some great advice & a lot of help..thanks to everyone. But unfortunately I still can't boot KDE. I can load KDE from inside TVM, but that's just a mess. It appears to me that Xorg 7 works & my nvidia drivers work. the nvidia splash comes up when I startx & glxgears runs fine. Something is just causing KDE not to be able to find the xserver.

when did you read the news/wget the new script? there was a little mistake in the wget.
it has to be wget -NC, not wget. with only wget the script will have been renamed to fix-xorg7-1.sh, if you happened to have the one from the other day still in home.
so check for that. maybe you executed the old fix.

I have one problem so far everything installed just fine , but it is as if my cdrom does not exsit, so I tried to mount it via a terminal by doing mount /dev/cdrom

and here is the error I am getting

mount: block device /dev/cdrom is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/cdrom,
missing codepage or other error

any clues ??? the cdrom is spinning as I can hear it, I also tried running K3b to see if it would do it's normal first run thing by showing the speed settings and ask if this was correct and sure enough it did so K3b does see the cdrom drive.

I just need to figure out why it wont mount when I put it in the drive ( the cd I am trying to mount has all my saved settings and such )

Thanks for any suggestions

Deb

By the way how do you know what version of Xorg you are running , I mean I assume there is a file somewhere that shows the version ?

Used the easter release with the upgrade installation option & fixed my problems. After about an hour of tweaking/re-installing a few programs, I was back where I was before I messed up my dist-upgrade. This couldn't have come out at a better time! Beats the hell out of re-installing from scratch & spending a day configuring everything back to my liking. Thanks to all involved.

I still wish I could have figured out how to manually fix my problem. I hate not knowing how I fixed something, would rather have learned something along the way, but at least I'm back to a full running system.

Now I just have to remember to verify my backup isn't corrupt before doing my next dist upgrade Verlegen

The wiki article suggests the -br option for Xorg, but not sure what it does.

It's supposed to "create root window with black background", but not sure that's what it means. My system works fine without it.

It changes that ugly gray crosshatch you see when X first comes up, and before kdm kicks in, to a black one, which looks much better. On some monitors, like my 17" LCD, the gray crosshatch also flickers.

Purely cosmetic, but nice. (One of Kanotix's scripts, fix-dpi-kdm, actually appends "-br" to the "ServerArgsLocal=" line instead of the "ServerCmd=" line.)

After d-u, I had some probs getting into kde but this was solved by making a sym-link to X as has been described by devil and others. Then booting into kde was normal, but the desktop appearance was distorted. All my fonts and icons were huge. Also the launch panel was squished and unreadable. Reset monitor res to 1024x768, but the problem continued. Did "/usr/sbin/fix-dpi-kdm 75" and tried 96, 72. This helped the default font size. So I went to Control Center and adjusted icon size and the launch panel, and then things got back to normal. I tried several apps and they all seemed to look and work fine. There are still a few appearance problems in some apps, though. I did "fix-fonts -e" after the d-u, of course.

Open Office is set for 12 point Bitstream Vera Serif, but it looks like about 16 point. I suppose I can adjust this for on screen viewing and then change it for printing, but that's not a great solution. Audacity has very oversized fonts throughout and I can't see any way to adjust this. Any ideas on this last little upgrade issue?

Ron

After upgrade x-cursor-theme was no longer obeyed. Simple fix:

cp -ar /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/default/ /usr/share/icons/

I also use the silver cursor theme. Any theme you want to use must now live in /usr/share/icons

cp -ar /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/icons/silver/ /usr/share/icons

Also GDM is hosed the same way KDM is and not so suprisingly the fix is the same.

mcedit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf

These lines must change:

Code:
Xnest=/usr/X11R6/bin/Xnest -audit 0 -name Xnest

# Add -terminate to make things behave more nicely
command=/usr/X11R6/bin/X -audit 0 -terminate

# Definition of the standard X server.
[server-Standard]
name=Standard server
command=/usr/X11R6/bin/X -dpi 96 -audit 0

[server-Chooser]
name=Chooser server
command=/usr/X11R6/bin/X -audit 0

Simply remove all instances of X11R6 and change X to Xorg. New paths should be:

/usr/bin/Xnest
/usr/bin/Xorg

you should have a smooth upgrade now, if the first step is done already. the only thing i could imagine would be, that some app says, can´t copy to /usrX11R6/bin, cause not empty. simply rename /usrX11R6/bin to .old or whatever, and you´ll be good to go.

Looks like I'm one of the ones that had xserver-xorg removed after a dist-upgrade (mentioned in Wiki). If it says it's going to remove it, do *NOT* go through w/ the upgrade. I can't figure out how to reinstall xserver-xorg. It won't let me reinstall (complains about a lot of dependencies it doesn't know how to install)-:

After a deep google dig, it seems others are also having problems w/ 64-bit Debian:
http://www.64bit-world.com/forums/linux ... 0-a-2.html
http://www.grep.be/blog/en/computer/debian/the_edge/

Thought it seems jackiebrown got his 64-bit Kanotix working someone (but had the same error msgs):
http://kanotix.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t ... rt-15.html

jackie: any tips on how you got your X back up? It seems like there are missing packages in the 64-bit debian repository (all the video/input ones don't seem to be installable).

UPDATE: fixed the missing dependency problems by adding another repository to my /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://ftp.fi.debian.org/debian unstable main contrib
Apparently, the amd64.debian.net repository doesn't have the all the latest packages. Now I can at least install everything (xserver-xorg-input*, xserver-xorg-video*) except xserver-xorg. xserver-xorg uses a program called whiptail which depends on libnewt 0.51 (only version available in repository is 0.52, so whiptail is out of date). I'll have to wait until whiptail is updated to use the new libnewt library before I can install xserver-xorg Auf den Arm nehmen

UPDATE2:
Downloaded libnewt0.51 from here: http://packages.debian.org/cgi-bin/down ... unofficial
Then did apt-get remove libnewt0.52 to uninstall the later one.
Then did dpkg -i to install libnewt0.51
Then did apt-get install xserver-xorg to install Xorg 7.0 finally
When I do the install-nvidia-debian.sh, it blows up (segfault) doing a gcc-version-check. At least I'm closer and X is installed Smilie
I'd bet I can switch my xorg.conf driver to nv instead of nvidia and run X, though I'm puzzled as to why the nvidia driver install blows up now...

do a dist-upgrade. i've been going crazy with that same problem for the last day or two. just did a dist-upgrade and the problem is now gone. the last dist-upgrade included a bump to udev - i'm guessing that is where the problem was.

umm I also think I did a minor change to my touchpad config via ksynaptics just to force it to write new config settings. that may have helped too (i enabled, then disabled, horizontal scrolling and then saved the "new" settings (w/o actual change, just to force-save the settings to xorg.conf)
