Is it possible to copy/paste output in an init 3 dist-upgrade session? Or can I use a | less pipe or something like that? I don't want to screw up an upgrade in progress to view what's happening, but I'd like to be able to view messages that fly by. Thanks, Kurt.

kurt,
you have the apt-bug, that comes with new version of apt.
just put an empty line at the end of /etc/apt/preferences and save it.
now apt works again
