Hardware - intel 945GM and intel wireless 3945ABG

I'm trying to install Debian on a new Fujitsu-siemens Si1520 (centrino Duo).
The most important drawback are the video card (i945GM) and wireless network card (i 3945 ABG).
The kanotix installer identify correctly the two hardware but then use the driver "vesa" for the video and is not able to configure the wireless network card nor the ethernet card (intel PRO/100 VE).
Disregarding for the moment the wireless problem I need to configure the video to drive an external LCD monitor at a resolution (1280x1024) different fron the Local Flat Panel (1280x800).
I tryied using i810 driver (MonitorLayout etc..) with 915resolution with no success.
Would vesa driver useful for my needs? Any hint? Will be any chance for a full support of the i945GN card in i810?

Regards
Roberto

the external monitor needs to be configured by manually editing xorg.conf

I've read a how to on that, it's not that hard, you need to basically tell xorg to search for monitor 2, if present use those options, if not present, don't.

Search for debian xorg dual monitor laptop on google and you'll find plenty of howtos, remember though that it has to support the second monitor being either on or off when you boot. The common dual monitor configuration utilities will not do that for you.

I thought that the 945 video stuff was being provided by intel as open sourced graphics drivers, but it seems like it may not be out there for some reason, and I haven't seen the 810 driver work recently, though I haven't really given it a good test. I seriously doubt the 810 driver will work for the 945 chipset though.

However, let's focus on the real question: you are trying to install debian, not kanotix. So you are on the wrong forums for that. If you want the kanotix tools, then install kanotix and see how it goes, kanotix will do much better than debian at hardware detection and support, that's why it exists.

Once you install kanotix, you will be able to get support for your questions, and probably answers, but if you are using debian the people here can't help you since you aren't using their tools.

There is a huge amount of documentation out there for debian on laptops, so you should have little difficulty in resolving most of your issues.

Thanks for the hints I'll search following your indication.

To better clarify my previous post I tryed to use kanotix as an installer then apt-get the debian packages that I usually use and that are not included in kanotix.
Kanotix (2006RC4) correctly log the dection of the video and wireless card but then was not able to configure the wireless card (nor the ethernet) and used the "vesa" driver for the video card.
So did I erroneously think that this is the rigth forum?

No, you're in the right place. Kanotix is basically debian sid with some extra packages added, so when install debian stuff you are doing the normal thing for kanotix.

However, kanotix is not quite debian, almost, but not quite.

so you have to be clear, if you are in fact using a kanotix install, then have these issues, then you are in the right place.

It looks like you are in the right place, so let's see if anyone can help you with the wireless card, I dont' use those.

Remember, kanotix is debian sid, so when you install kanotix, you are installing a kanotix flavor of debian sid. It's not like ubuntu, it uses the normal debian apt repositories just like debian sid would do, but it also uses some kanotix repositories and scripts.

Hi
I'm able now (if pressing the keys combination Fn+F3 I swap to the external monitor before booting), using the driver "i810", to get the maximum resolution on the external monitor of 1280x1024 (16 bit plane because the driver does not support 32 bit plane) .
Now the problems comes because the Kanotix booting GUI hangs when I try to swap to the external monitor before to chose the OS pressing Fn+F3 .
Any help?
