I think it's satire, though it's just barely possible it isn't
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shelley_the_Republican

But it's too perfect, too stupid, and too cliche in many ways, my first impression was that it's satire, but the problem here in the states is that the line has blurred, since the extreme right now basically is a joke, so it's hard to differentiate satire on them from them, so to speak.

But I think it is satire, notice that the first comment in many of the threads is by the same poster, who delivers the requisite deadpan lines.

I'd link to some of their linux articles, which really arent' that different from the other hacker/linux joke articles that have filled the web in the past, but I don't believe in linking to sites like this as a general principle, just in case it is serious.

But check it out, the linux/ms article is pretty funny, whether or not it's serious.

the debate on whether or not it's a joke is pretty funny as well, if you go here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Shell ... Republican
you can see that it looks like there was a notice that it was satire.

The thing that sort of scares me is that while I'm almost positive it is in fact satire, it's just barely posible that it isn't. The fact that I could even have room for this doubt is a sad commentary on the state of affairs, since it's obviously ludicrous. The really sad thing though is that once in a while I listen to some of those 'great american's the site cites, and they are not all that different from the tone of the site, I'm referring to guys like rush limbaugh and sean hannity, who could easily have said many of the things in those pages.

And if you've ever heard the Ollie North talk show on radio, that's even more wacko.

I couldn't bring myself to read the replies, the last thread on people falling for that linux hacker joke was already depressing enough. As you've noted, without humor life is not worth a lot.

Piper,

Shelley is just a great thing on the internet. But the real thing are the Yes Men, they are massive:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Yes_Men
http://www.theyesmen.org/
http://gatt.org/

Doing satire in a way that people on top level do not check that it is satire, that's new. And the Yes Men are publishing their procedures (Shelley is not, he is hiding), and still they are invited as the big conservative guns, still expanding their ironic attitude, still becoming more radical in exposing the cynical approach of the people who are applauding them. Simply amazing.

I just know people from the US whom I met in Europe (I've never been to the US), I was listentig to (musicians) or I was "talking" to online (like now), but I never asked them where they are shopping. But usually I really enjoyed the communication (hope it was the other way round as well).

Although: Michael Moore at Walmart is a classic.

Why, yes it does. Fortunately, Torvalds lives in the state to the south, which is even more godless and communist.

Dammit, slam, now I have to go clean that "gop.com" cookie off my computer.

Too bad your pal Ahnold will never be president (that damn Constitution). Hey, you think he'll ever get his name back on that stadium in Graz, Austria?

It's actually just a few clicks to become a campainer for GOP, and Shelley was more than happy to join my team after I told her what my plans for the future of our country are. You might join, too - just a click! Smilie

Your site doesn't have any description of what you stand for? Perhaps that might help the campaign to get members?

Also your Governor seems somewhat at odds with the party anyway over several major issues... not that its a bad thing but looking in from the outside it hardly seems to be representative of the Republican party as a whole so I would say whatever your vision is needs to be expressed.

Not so much, actually. Last November, the Governator sent 4 laws to the voters for their approval -- all defeated. One would have reduced the power of teachers' unions; another, reduced the power of unions in general; the third, given the governor more power over the state budget; and the fourth, redrawn the state's political districts.

Since that defeat, poor Ahnold's been laying low. Maybe slam can help cheer him up.

a govenor can send out _laws_?

I'm still inclined to go to the next Austrian police station and report Arnold for murder. He still has the Austrian citizenship. So do I. And constitution forbids death penalty in Austria, it is murder.

In 24 states (including mine), any group can put an initiative on the ballot by collecting enough signatures of registered voters. (This process bypasses the state's legislature. Sometimes it's used to overrule the a law passed by the state's legislature, or to put a law that the legislature can't find the will to pass up for a public vote.)

Schwarzenegger (obviously) wasn't the only person behind the 4 failed measures (called "propositions" in California), but he heavily promoted them as a "reform package."

Apparently that's why they took his name off the stadium in Graz...? That made news here.

Exactly. Death penalty is considered "conspirative murder" in most european countries and all people involved in decision and execution would be prosecuted definitely. And hubi, although for some years he has held double citizenship (as I still do), he is no Austrian/European Union citizen any more. His Austrian citizenship has ended automaticly by law when he accepted his nomination for becoming "Governator".

By the way: Unfortunately I have to announce that I am unable to continue my hard work for GOP, because working for Kanotix is consuming all my time and energy. However, it was interesting to explore how easy it was to set up a campain at GOP - and I still feel honored that Shelly instantly signed up to support it. Winken

Chris

How's that work? Is their an Austrian law that say's if you stand for Governor in California you automatically loose your citizenship (but you can be German Chancellor)?

edits:
It appears his joining the US military (in real lfe not a film) would qualify for automatic loss as would the US being defined as "Person has employment with a foreign government that is damaging to Austrian interests."

For anything else he needs to apply to the Austrian consular authorities.
