Hardware - Kanotix doesn't see my USB modem.

Hello,

I tried Kanotix on the liveCD and I love it very much. Only it couldn't find my Toshiba pcx 2600 USB cable modem. Frankly, Ubuntu Dapper is the only distro I've had it work in out of the box, but I would like to give Kanotix a good try too.

The Toshiba site says they do NOT have Linux support for their USB, yet Ubuntu does see it. Is there a way to get Kanotix to see it as well?

Thanks for any suggestions,

Steve

I know absolutely nothing about USB modems. One thing to check however is that Kanotix actually sees the modem.
Code:
lsusb

What you do from there to configure it is beyond me.
What driver does Ubuntu use for the modem?
Is there any possibility of using an Ethernet card instead of USB? That would be better anyway.

Here are the results of lsusb:

Bus 003 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

Bus 005 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0930:030b Toshiba Corp.

Bus 002 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

It recognizes the modem. I tried the configure usb/modem option under the kanotix>Network option of the menu, but I didn't truly understand what I was doing. Now that we know that it sees it, what steps do I take to make it active?

Thanks.

As a matter fact USB modems are mostly as bad as PCI modems. I had also problems as I was modem users. To solve them I bought a serial modem. The work always.

What does netcardconfig show? Did you try that?

No, I didn't try netcardconfig. I'll give that a go and let you know.

I ran a sudo lshw |less command and found the following:

Toshiba RNDIS Adapter

driver = rndis_host

Did you run netcardconfig ?

What does the contents of

/etc/network/ifstate
/etc/network/interfaces

say.

Personally I would get rid of the USB modem (call roadrunner/time warner) and exchange it (no money involved) and get a cheap $7.00 to $15.00 network adapter (best buy, compusa, better yet a flea market it can be had for about $5.00) USB is slow as hell for internet.

Oh sorry, netcardconfig came up with nothing. I have a DLink dfe-530tx around here somewhere, but i don't have a free pci slot.

No modem can be configured with netcardconfig and dhcp is even worse in combination with a modem (in case there is a dhcpd active, default gateway and dns settings would be broken by dhcp).
