Titel: How do people transfer DVD's to hard drive?
I want to put my dvd film collection on to my hard drive but I'm not sure how to go about it.
I've been doing a bit of googling and there doesn't seem to be a definative app to do this.
I've tried one called k9copy but after 3 attempts it failed right at the end each time complaining that it can't find a particular directory, which is there.
I want to copy the DVD's to a format where I can play them directly in kaffeine or totem and it must be GUI based, the simpler the better. I know there are probably some very simple text commands to do it but it has to be friendly to the missus cos she doesn't and won't do command line.

Any advice appreciated.

Hmm, Reading that FAQ item seems like it is in a different language. Oh, that is because it is . . .

To be seriously honest, I took 4 DVD's

John Wayne - Fighting seabees

Fantastic 4 (stupid but..)

XXX ( XANDER CAGE - Vin Diesel)

Twitches (daughters favorite)

and did a copy and paste from the DVD player, opened with my "favorite" application and they all worked. I did this just now, to see what would happen.

Apologies, I keep forgetting about the legal issues.

I tried this, both as root and user and it complained about not being able to read some of the files.
I was left with a folder with some .vob files but non of them would play.
2 days later, after trying 6 different apps on 4 different dvd's and have only managed to copy 1 dvd. On playback it had subtitles which couldn't be turned off and the quality of the film was appalling.
I'm going to have to give up on this. Looks like I do have a use for windows xp after all.

<EDIT>
By the way, all 4 dvd's I've tried are originals, I don't have any copies. Does that have any bearing on why I'm having trouble?

Mine were originals also, what you can try and do is copy and paste them to your windows partition (in windows) and open them from that partition from linux, my dvd's are kinda old, I don't have any newer ones to test from, and I don't plan on buying any more until dollywood puts out a good film Geschockt

shame
apart from the copy procedure. do your dvds play form dvd-rom, anyway? if not - you do seem to lack some essential scand!nav!an software.

if uknowhat!mi:n and this is working fine, then indeed you should be able to simply copy the vobs to hd, as piper mentioned. perhaps not all of them but quite a few.

how do you copy your discs in winxp? you do like wine, don't you?

you have mentioned a software here just recently supposed to do the job running Linux. there are two beta versions of this software available. unfortunately the corresponding debian repo is not available atm. try your search engine of choice.

i don't know about the 2nd beta. seems to be rather new. i think some french guys have it available - BUT in this case it is related to a Linux-distribution whose name i will not utter here;)

edit: hmm, this post could be on the brink of doom. not sure, strange days. if in doubt. please delete.
