I bought this cable on ebay, what it does is boost signal, make sure enough power reaches an USB device 5 m from machine.
I have used it on linux before but now it does not work, on my current setup, kanotix 2011 running backports kernel and necessary updates to run that kernel.
It works in XP so the cable is ok.
It also did work in linux earlier.

For 5m you usually use a standard not a special cable.

Yes and I need a longer one too. But this is a special cable, you find it all over ebay/the net. Thanks for help at IRC channel.

Have gotten as far as installing latest kernel. This gives 1280x1024 85 using KDE system settings, without nvidia or nouveau driver.
have no idea what driver its running..

Much better already than the old kernels.

But that effing USB cable still does not work in linux with the usb modem.. not with Squeeze kernel nor latest. Get another one..

Now, with latest kernel I should install linux-firmware 1.88? remove Squeeze firmware? I reinstalled the latter to try the Squeeze kernel, had removed them using text commands.

The latest kernel set up graphics as above with no configuration on my part except the basic steps (basic xorg.conf and nvidia-settings).
Good.
Cable prob persists but it's just to get another one.

Do you connect your cable to your motherboard directly or via a hub? Often it is best to connect it directly to the board.

Directly. USB will always suck it seems. You can actually get PCI modem cards, I got an offer to buy one for $70 direct from Chinese factory, maybe should do that.
