They are going for it, read the translated press release. It's using gnuLinEx, which is a debian based self rolled distro.

No nonsense about 'studying the viability' of doing it, they are doing it, as of now all employees must use open document formats, and as of one year, all computers must be running gnuLinEx on their systems. How refreshing, actual commitment to free software and open standards for the long term good and benefit of the people. This makes me like Spain even more than I already do.

I especially like the use of the word 'all' in this context, no supporting anything proprietary, no maintaining 'some windows desktops' etc, it's a real switch, full commitment.

Zitat:
to make a headway in the integration of the Information Society in modern day Public Administration and in the global society, it is fundamental "guarantee the control and administration of aspects so important as technological independence, interoperability between computer platforms, homogeneous information systems, computer security for information systems, real technological innovation and conformance to open and free standards."

The Spanish is far more eloquent than the translation though:

garantizar el control y gestión de aspectos tan transcendentes como la independencia tecnológica...

From the website faqs and screen shots, this one looks really good. In Spanish, of course, but the howtos are really good, they put some thought into this one, might even be worth translating for other distros. This is the same gnuLinEx they've been testing and running on their education system's machines for a few years now.

This is real debian, with some very nice extras added on, looks like the redhat installer, maybe the ubuntu package update notification application, some other stuff. Gnome 2.14, 2.6.16 kernel, didn't quite get in xorg 7, still with 6.9.

Isos available for downloading, I'd give this one some serious thought if you don't mind gnome and want a spanish language distro. Not sure how their repositories are setup, or other technical details.

The key is understanding that this is in fact a transcendental question of technological independence, as the Spanish version said, but unfortunately not the English translation, and has zero to do with TCO, or other fake Big Software invented terms. In other words, it's a higher principle, having to do with the responsibility of a government to its people. That's the same argument the Peru MS letters pushed too by the way. MS can never even pretend that they can qualify in that arena, so they have to push the discussion away from that point as fast as possible.

Of course, it's fairly certain they will save money long term, but that is not the reason for the decision. Not forcing users to buy expensive systems to simply view or access their data, and so on. Microsoft always tries to push this discussion to money because they cannot win on any other grounds, there is no possible justification for spending your citizen's money to further lock them in long term into expensive proprietary systems.

Their site looks like it's collapsing under the traffic, lol.. that didn't take long, the news just came out today

Does anyone remember the letter of the Peruvian congressman Villanueva to Microsoft from 2002? What a letter! Should be taught in rhetoric-courses Winken

Here's the english translation:
