I have a question which leds to another question. I have just tried xfce and although I found it nice I could not get my screen resolution to display correctly. Using kde, no problem. When I first bought the monitor I had to go to console and do "fix-res" and since I have had no problems. This would not work in xfce and I would really like to try it but prefer the native resolution over what they give me. Any suggestions on how to change it in xfce??

This leads to the other question. When I got the new monitor and had to change the resolution I went to the manual (One on the left). The only problem is that the commands listed in the instructions don't work as listed. I even did a cut and paste, then started trying different variations of the commands.

"su

fixres.sh 1280x1024

fix-dpi-kdm.bash"

This is what is there but 'fixres.sh' gives me an error. I finally found 'fix-res 1440x1050' worked and gave me what I wanted. Then I did 'fix-dpi-kdm' and that worked.

Don't get me wrong here. I tried a bunch of distros and finally on the advice of piper got this one. I have been really happy with it and am trying to learn as much about it as I can. I appreciate all of the help that I have gotten here and in partitcular the attitude of the people giving it, that being a helpful one. I also like to try to find the answer before I ask for something right before me. I just bring this up because the manual should be the first place to go and if it is wrong, trouble.

Thanks for any help,

John

Hi John Smilie

In Xfce

Did you right click on desktop > settings > display settings > resolution and choose from there ?

Yes, and the correct setting was not displayed. Native resolution for this monitor is 1440 x 1050 and in kde it works. In xfce the top is 1280 x 1024. That's what I have on my 17". That was one of the reasons that I bought this monitor. Most of the 19" that I looked at also had 1280x1024. Wanted more screen.

I even tried root konsole, fix-res 1440x1050 but it wouldn't work for me. When I did the reset (ctrl-alt-backspace) it went back to the old setting.

Thanks,

John

Hi John

I can't get higher than 1280 x 1024 (old crt 17") myself, I did some searches, but, you can do the 1440x1050 in kde which means (to me atleast) your xorg.conf is configured correctly. I don't have an answer for this and maybe someone else who uses xfce can chime in. sorry. All my searches suggested that you edit the xorg.conf file, but as you said, you can do it in kde so I believe xorg.conf is already set.

Piper,

Thanks, I think I will go over to their (xfce) site and see if I can find answer.
