Titel: Options at boot?  BeitragVerfasst am: 31.08.2006, 00:19 Uhr

Hi,
I am running Kanotix from CD now, and I am puzzled by the beginning options. There are 3 sets, and in english and german. They say Yes or No for all 3, but I don't recall the exact phrases. I put this in the install forum cause I figured it would be there during installation as well. Could someone please explain to me what these mean?

Thanks.

Hello all,

I'd like to try out Kanotix 64 (64-2005-04-lite) on my Turion ML-30 box. The box came with two visible partitions, a hidden one and I have added a fourth primary so that I can dual boot with Kanotix. I get to the second install screen and the "root partition" field is greyed out and blank. I have tried to add a mount point for / on dev/hda4 but whatever I try to do (mounting/unmounting partitions, reformating the partition with qparted and also in windows (as ext3/reiserfs) using acronis disc director) the field stays greyed out.

I would imagine I'm doing some pretty basic wrong. I have only installed Ubuntu before and that was pretty easy as I picked the drive to be formatted and it did the rest, adding a swap partition.

Any comments much appreciated. I like the look and feel of Kanotix and it has a good reputation.

It's a long time since I did this but at one stage the installer wouldn't point to a ResierFS partition; I formatted as ext2, it then found the partition and reformatted it to ReiserFS prior to installation.

Hi, thanks for your reply. I have tried to format hda4 with ext3 and resierfs but the installation won't point to either - should I be formatting this partition with ext2? I don't think I've tried that.

By the way, I'm new to all of this and I don't yet know what these terms mean Geschockt

Many thanks

I've done four installs and used ext2 for each without problems.

There can be issues with whether the partition is mounted (or not, I can't remember which)

Idee Cool, thanks drb, I reformatted the primary (dev/hda4) as ext2 in windoze with acronis disc director (couldn't seem to do it with Kanotix' qtparted) and the 'root partition' pointed straight to it. I can't create the linux swap partition now - with either program. Surely there must be a way of doing this through the installation process - even windoze has this functionality although it is seldom used - with this Kanotix installation it's essential Geschockt

Have you created a partition you want as swap? Create the partition as a different file format (fat32) then reformat to swap with gparted.

Cheers drb, that's the problem. I have 4 primary partitions: one Win XP 'PQSERVICE' partition (whatever that is) and two FAT 32's (one will be used for XP and one for data to e accessed by linux and XP. Whatever I try (qtparted/acronis) I can't split 500mb off the ext2 partition (presumably create a logical partition) for the swap. i could do this easily in qtparted on the Ubuntu installation but now I'm lost. I am a complete newbie and I may have to give up if I can't even do this simple task.

Thanks again.

Yes, you need to convert one partition to a logical, it should then split (or resize and make a new partition).

One thing I can tell you, 500MB will not be accepted as minimum size for a partition. I believe you have to go a bit bigger (526?). Ran into that before but not sure what partitioning tool.

Thanks both Cool

I can't seem to create another partition, primary (for obvious reasons) or logical or extended for some reason. I've never had this problem before but I am pretty new to this kind of thing. Acronis is much easier to follow and more featured that qtparted on Kanotix 64 so I'd better get the manual out, which is what I should have done anyway, I just thought that Kanotix would help a bit more (this is an installation so that I can learn more about linux and Kanotix after all). I'm not giving up yet because I want this to work but it has put me off a bit following the ease of the Ubuntu 32 bit installation (Ubuntu 64 just won't boot on my system).

Thanks again.

I used partition magic recently to make partitions with no issues - ended up with 508mb swap.

@sul - If I'm reading your first post correctly you already have 4 primary partitions (the max. allowed). If so, you will have to delete one of the primary partitions and create an extended. Then you can add whatever logicals you need for /, /home, and swap. I've also read that the hidden partitions on some notebooks can cause boot problems, depends on how it is used, might want to check Google/Linux.

Thanks coop15 (and drb again). That would explain why the options aren't open to me. It is a notebook (Aspire 5003 WLMi) that was shipped with a bizarre arrangement of partitions - the PQSERVICE, an XP boot and a DATA partition. I'd planned for my Kanotix to be on the last remaining pirmary but I can't split that. I don't know what the first primary (PQ ect....) is so I'll have to look into it. As it's new I might just do a clean XP reinstall but I've already collected some stuff I wouldn't want to lose.

Thanks again.

coop15 - I get the same auth failure every time I post but I ignore it and just go to the bookmarked link to this topic to read my message.

Sul, if you're more comfortable doing the partitioning with another product there's no reason why you can't do that, and then switch over to install off the Kanotix disk once you have the partitions the way you want them. Kanotix of course doesn't really care what software did the partitioning.

You are hardly alone in this, by the way. g/qtparted has always been a headache for me personally. Since I don't use it very often I forget how to avoid all the pitfalls, and it always takes me a while to get it set up right.

Cheers Ashton. I did think it was just me Verlegen but I've kind of backed off this a bit and been playing about with an old IBM 600Mhz box that I now have triple booting with XP, ME and Ubuntu. I had to reinstall Ubuntu after the ME install (through Ghost) to get a decent GRUB loader back after Acronis OS selector failed miserably to load anything apart from XP. The partitioning in Ubuntu is a dream but I will go back to Kanotix on the new 64 bit notebook as I like the look of the system.

Cheers all. If I come up with a systematic way of doing this (I probably just need to actually read the acronis manual and cross my fingers when Kanotix starts installing Mit den Augen rollen ) I'll post some info.
