After a major d-u, I've had connection problems on my LAN, and noticed that Watchdog is one of the processes running. Isn't this a firewall app? I use a hardware firewall and don't want any software firewall processes running, but I don't see how to turn it off, or how it got turned on in the first place. No man page for Watchdog either. Anyone know what's going on here? How do I shut this off, or is it safe to just remove the package?

Thanks,
Ron

Ron, watchdog is not a firewall, it just checks periodically whether the system is still "alive and kicking". If watchdog dies, the system will reboot. Your network problems must be caused by something else.

ockham23,
Thanks, I realized after I posted that it probably wasn't a firewall. I've been suffering with connection problems since samba 3.0.23, and I'm grasping at straws, as the saying goes.

Ron

Ron, if you have problems with samba (and who hasn't?), you can either set up a windows file server or use ssh/fish for simple file sharing. ssh/sftp even works with windows clients; the windows program is called winscp and it's free: http://sourceforge.net/projects/winscp/

ockham23, Thanks. I have a Mac that wouldn't connect. It's been weird, worked fine with samba before this last upgrade. I could move files, because samba worked from kanotix TO the mac but not the other way around. However, I have database files on kanotix that I needed to access from the mac. I finally did a workaround, so I should be OK. I think there is some sort of bug in the latest samba, at least on debian. There is a report that sounds very similar to my issue. Thanks for the info, though.
Regards,
Ron
