As a last-ditch effort to restore my computer, I did something from the command-mode which I was certain would crash the system:

apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade

And as I expected, it totally screwed up my system.

Everything was going along, until it started trying to set up the locales. Then, there was a Kernel crash all over my screen. Character-garbage 20 screens full.

Since then I've tried

dpkg --configure -a

several times, but the same thing always happens, when the program tries to set up locales.

Gee, this was fun!

I have done the 'same' d-u a few hours earlier and no problem here with the locales or any other stuff. What have you done before so that you have the need to restore your computer and which version of Kanotix are you using?

I'm using version 2006-01-RC4, and had previously installed questionable graphics drivers.
Originally I had "Mesa" installed for its OpenGL devlopment libraries, that allow "Crystal Space" to compile. But then, failing to acquire a Radeon 9200 graphics card, I tried to patch the graphics driver to an NVIDIA, for my GeForce2, using install-nvidia-debian.sh . This left me with a Control Center that freezes the computer, plus a Help Center that does the same.

I was hoping this D-U would spare me having to completely reinstall Linux, which now I'll have to do.

Crystal Space takes about 2 hours just to compile, and requires many Packages to be installed. And I don't have a Home Partition.

Well, it's obviously that the graphics driver stuff is the problem then. Have you started the install-nvidia-debian script from runlevel 3 (from the KDE desktop CTRL-ALT-F1 to switch to the terminal, login as root and then 'init 3')? Never install nvidia or ati graphics driver when KDE is running. And also after every dist-upgrade you have to re-install the graphics driver when xorg components have been updated. Of course it *can* be also a bug in the Nvidia driver itself and I also don't now how good Nvidia supports old cards like the GF2 in their current drivers. For now it's probably helpful when you post the content of your /etc/X11/xorg.conf

dirk,
it would be nice if you would change the headline of your post saying:'I totallly demolished my system', before people get the idea, that there is something wrong with last dist-upgrade, which is not the case.

In response to my ongoing problems with the GeForce2 GTS/AGP/SSE graphics card and its driver, I've now decided to do a complete reinstall of Kanotix 2006-01-RC4.

Directly after the reinstall, that of course included a reformat, and this time a Home Partition, I performed these steps before investing any work (of course in run level 3):

su

update-scripts-kanotix.sh

install-nvidia-debian.sh

In this case, there was no prior software. Yet, installing the graphics card in this way again starts the problem, that the Control Center freezes the system, that the KDE doesn't accept the root password, and so on. Which before I partially solved with a successful 'kdebase' Upgrade.

This is the thread where I've tested this problem from the perspective of the graphics card:

http://kanotix.com/PNphpBB2-viewtopic-t-21795.html

Since this problem clearly just comes back, when there was no prior install, I have to assume that my original perceptions were accurate. But it is helpful to me that this happens directly after a new install, because now I can reinstall again, and just follow my original plan, not to OpenGL-install the graphics card at all. At which point the Control Center also doesn't freeze.

maybe just get a cheap nvidia card like 5200 or 6200.
the nvidia script also allows to use older drivers. for that you open the script and move the default from the latest driver to one from the 71xx or even 6xxx series by commenting/uncommenting. not sure if that would help, but worth a try.

What you've written here sounds like good advice. But there is a question I'd have, about how to perform future dist-upgrade commands without getting a Kernel crash again (with "<0>Kernel Panick - Could not Sync..." as text output.) I do know enough, to exit the X-server display by pressing <Ctrl-Alt-F1> first, for such a task. But I've also noticed that the X-server never really quits (unless install-nvidia-debian.sh makes it quit.) Also, the Kernel not only keeps running, but further re-initializes itself as the more sensitive packages are being replaced.

It makes sense to me, that if the Kernel restarts during the dist-upgrade in progress, and has partially upgraded modules loaded, some type of Kernel crash becomes likely.

But how does everybody else circumvent this problem?

Last time, I actually forced the X-server to quit, after the initial dist-upgrade failed, simply because I hoped that this would let me finish

dpkg --configure -a

But it did not, instead apparently crashing again halfway through setting up the locales.
I can only force X to quit by pressing <Alt-SysReq-S> , <Alt-SysReq-I> since merely sending a kill message to X just starts the X-screen up again.

Yet, my hardware seems solid enough, that from a reformatted hard-drive, I can get through re-installing Kanotix from scratch. And the hardware was also solid enough, to let apt-get download 300 Packages, before it tried to replace those into the working system. And the working system includes dynamic (.so) libraries that load from the hard drive even if the Kernel doesn't , etc...

For now I'll try to avoid a 300-package dist-upgrade by waiting for your upcoming stable release.

Dirk

P.S. My only problem with "I totally demolished my computer" is the fear that then, people will think I threw it off the balcony or something. dist-upgrades must be working for so many other people, but I have trouble with any type of 'apt-get' install that installs more than 90 Packages.

i never ever had a kernel panic or any kernel issues during dist-upgrades and i do them every day.
remember that after ctrl-alt-F1 you are still in init 5 on the textconsole. logon as root and then do init 3.
then x is not active. but the kernel issue is not related to dist-upgrade, unless you tried to upgrade the kernel through apt.

Thank you for that vital information. I now did my dist-upgrade, and am evry happy with myself, for finally doing something that works on the Linux Box again. Smilie
