I removed my cd-rw from this computer and put in a dvd-rw that is also of course a cd-rw. I deleted the mount point for the old cd and remove it's entry in the fstab. I rebooted expecting the new hardware to be found. It wasn't added to the fstab as I expected (remember I am new to Linux so do some things that might not make sense sometimes). When I checked using dmesg this is what I get (stuff not relevant removed to make it shorter / dvd is a read/write model that works under windows xp. it is a Micro Advantage drive).

I had a blank dvd +r in the drive when I did this.

Any help appreciated. Trying to get away the horrible dvd burning in windows.

You are probably mounting it wrong.

/dev/hdb /media/cdrom0 udf,iso9660 user,noauto 0 0

is the correct syntax assuming you have only one dvd / cd device

My guess is that you didn't include the noauto item.

By the way, if you're running this on the same ide channel as your main harddrive, which I assume is /dev/hda, give some thought to not doing that, ide can get annoyed when devices of two different speeds are on the same channel. I've had hard drives fail in that configuration before so I don't use it anymore. Hard drives on one channel, optical/cd/dvd drives on their own. If that's an option for you I recommend you do it.

Also, dvd units require the full 80 strand ide cable to function correctly at full speed, not the old standard 40 strand one that they used to use for cd units.

h2,

Thanks for responding and my apologies for taking so long in getting back. I read you suggestions but didn't want to post until I tried them. I only have the one dvd-rw installed. The original entry in fstab was correct and I didn't forget the noauto. My biggest concern was why it was being shown as a dvd-rom and not dvd-rw. Anyway, after reading your post I tried removing all traces of the hardware, disconnected it and powered up. Checked that fstab didn't have it and nothing was in media as a mount point. shut down, reconnected, found no entry in fstab (to see if it would find it) and cut and pasted your entry. created a mount point but still wouldn't work. shut down, swapped cables so that each was on their own per your suggestion. When I did this I think I discovered the problem. Where the cable connects to the dvd, one of the pins on the dvd was pushed about 1/2 way in. That can't be good. I carefully pulled it back out and proceeded to hook it up. restarted, had to correct fstab to reflect hdd instead of hdb. still nothing. I removed the drive and installed it on my windows computer. Under linux and windows both I get the same results, it works for cd's but that is it. I put in a movie from blockbuster and it wasn't recognized by windows. same with a dvd-r and dvd-rw. I guess that pin really screwed it up. First time that has happened to me.

Anyway, thanks for your help and just wanted to let you know what happened. Now I have 2 cd-rw's Smilie and no dvd-rw but Christmas is coming and the ones with light scribe tech is coming down in price.

Thanks,

john

AFAIK LightScribe does not work under Linux unless you get a LaCie drive.
I posted about it here.
It would be interesting to see their software and try it on other LightScribe drives.

mzilikazi,

Thanks for that info. I have one on order from frys.com. Hope to have it Monday (2 day shipment - ordered this morning). I had planned to pop it in the linux computer and see if it got detected and see what happened. Thanks to the link about your previous post. I have that thread bookmarked and will download all of the stuff this weekend. When I get it in and try it out I will post back to that forum or should I start a new thread? The one I ordered says of course windows os but that is almost always the case isn't it?

Here is the link to the product description.

http://shop3.outpost.com/%7BWL0IUldsyM1 ... IN_RSLT_PG

I almost bought the samsung, I have a tv, dvd player, and a couple of hard drives from them but there was something about the hp that I liked better. The rebate helped wasn't the deciding factor. I think it was the speeds or formats. I took a long look before ordering.

Anyway, thanks for the link and I will give a post back when something happens.

John
