Titel: RC4 installs to 35%, Easter and RC3 install/upgrade OK  BeitragVerfasst am: 02.11.2006, 07:00 Uhr

I have an old IBM A21 laptop, P3 700mhz, 384 meg of RAM. As the subject says, RC4 will only install to 35% then simply stop. The machine is not locked up. I am booting to the CD with everything off (ACPI, DMA, etc).

The same laptop will install Easter and RC3 OK, either a fresh install or upgrading to RC3. When I tried to upgrade from RC3 to RC4, it went to 50% then stopped.

I put in another hard drive, and it stops at exactly the same points. I have tried both with a bare hard drive, and creating a /home and / partitions formatted reiserFS.

I have an old Gateway Solo laptop, I installed Easter, upgraded through RC4 with no problems (one of the hard drives I tried on the IBM is the hard drive from the Gateway).

I have tried this many times in many combinations, and I seem to be getting consistent results. Are there any quirks about IBM A21 Thinkpads that I am missing?

TIA

Did you burn the disc using DAO (Disc At Once, in nero it is SAO) using high quality CD-media and not faster than 8x ?

How big is your home ?

If big enough maybe you can boot and install fromiso

This works great on my AMD 350mhz and 256mb of ram Winken 16 minutes to install Smilie

I burned it from FC4 with K3B. I've burned a lot of ISO's, I think that part is OK. I'm using the same discs on all the machines, it all worked on the Gateway, fails consistently on the IBM. There aren't any Windows machines available at home. It may have defaulted to 12x. I had checked the MD5sums of the ISO files, they are all OK. I haven't tried fromiso, good idea! The /home was 10 gig, plenty of room for that.

I'm mainly puzzled why I could upgrade through RC4 on a much older/slower laptop with no problems, and the (kind of) newer one seems to fail pretty reliably. Between the two laptop/HD combinations, I've probably done 20 installs, testing the various possibilites.

Installs to desktops have been no problem, just this one laptop.

thx

I re-burned the ISO at 8x, and it upgraded fine, thanks for the tip. I was short on time, and briefly tried fromiso, but wasn't quite clear on where to put the ISO, in regards to the posted grub commands. This drive is partitioned into / and /home.

thx

I use a seperate partition for the iso (partition where I save bookmarks, wallpaper, mail, etc.... 10 gigs in space)

This is configured for my drives, so you will have to change it accordingly to your setup (if your interested)

mkdir /media/hda12/Kanotix (put kano iso in here)
mkdir -p /mnt/test
mount -t iso9660 -o loop,ro /media/hda12/Kanotix/KANOTIX-2006-01-RC4.iso /mnt/test
cp /mnt/test/boot/vmlinuz /media/hda12/Kanotix/
cp /mnt/test/boot/miniroot.gz /media/hda12/Kanotix/

edit /boot/grub/menu.lst

### ISO boot
title Kanotix 32bit from ISO
kernel (hd0,11)/Kanotix/vmlinuz ramdisk_size=100000 init=/etc/init fromiso=/Kanotix/KANO*.iso lang=en-utf8 apm=power-off nomce vga=791 quiet noprompt noeject
initrd (hd0,11)/Kanotix/miniroot.gz
