Hi everybody,

I've just installed RC6 to my hard drive (using the Acritox installer---which, I finally figured out, was the way to install Kanotix---how about that!).

But when I boot, I get only a logon prompt, no KDE. Ideas?

Thanks, a.

Apparently some people can start KDE by typing "startx" (without quotes). Here's what happened when I logged on and tried it:

Code:
xauth:  creating new authority file /home/ander/.serverauth.5370

X Window System Version 7.1.1
Build Operating System: UNKNOWN
Current Operating System: Linux peachopolis 2.6.22-10-kanotix #1 SMP Sat Sep 1 [blah blah... irrelevant stuff skipped]

Module Loader present
Markers: (--) probed, (**) from config file, (==) default setting,
   (++) from command line, (!!) notice, (II) informational,
   (WW) warning, (EE) error, (NI) not implemented, (??) unknown
(==) Log file: "/var/log/Xorg.0.log", Time: Wed Sep 26 22:21:33 2007
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf"
(EE) No devices detected.

Fatal server error:
no screens found
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
     after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

Yikes, Chinese.

I'd be glad to post some logs here---but since I get only a command prompt, please tell me the commands to save the logs to a USB drive. (Sorry, I've used other versions of Kanotix, but I haven't had much time to learn more shell stuff. Thanks for your indulgence.)

Here are my system specs in case that helps:

Gateway MX6708 laptop system:
Intel Centrino Core Duo T2300
2GB DDR2 RAM (533 MHz)
ATI Mobility Radeon X1400
WXGA display (native 1280x800)
Sigmatel high-definition audio
80 GB SATA h/d
Intel PRO/Wireless LAN 3945ABG

Well in live mode you could have started it with

screen=auto fglrx

that downloads the 50 mb driver on the fly. But why you could not even use vesa on hd install is not really clear. You might want to add 2 additional cheatcodes like:

hda=none hdc=none

Thanks, Kano... I tried booting the CD with:

screen=auto fglrx

...and it did start to DL the ATI driver (nice!). Unfortunately I don't have time to do a complete reinstall right now, which is what I think you're suggesting---but I'll try as soon as I can.

Meanwhile, another question please, before I reinstall:

When I did the install I posted about here, Acritox asked for two user names. It wasn't completely clear---but as far as I could tell, it wanted an admin name and a regular-user name. So I entered a different admin name (not "Kanotix") and my usual user name.

In the same step, it asked for only one password, after the second name. I assumed that meant that the admin p/w would still be "kanotix", until I changed it later.

When I restarted from h/d (and got only the command prompt), I could log on with the regular user name/password, but when I tried some "sudo" commands, it said I wasn't in the sudo group. Was I supposed to add myself to sudo somehow, before restarting?

I also tried logging in with these user names / passwords:

_ [new admin name] / kanotix

_ [new admin name] / [no password]

_ Kanotix / kanotix

...but none of them worked. What did I miss?

There was never a pw called kanotix. You enter a root pw (to be entered after su not sudo) and a normal user pw.

Kano, as you suggested, I ran the CD with:
Code:
screen=auto fglrx hda=none hdc=none

That didn't work. The ATI driver downloaded and installed to RAM, then X tried a bunch of video modes, but only the X startup remained (black screen with white "X" pointer). I copied all the error messages---so I'll paste them below, in case they're useful to you or you're just curious.

Then I tried adding just the first code:
Code:
screen=auto fglrx

And it worked! Wow, what a beautiful, sharp display---and full native resolution (1280x800) without having to specify it. This is the nicest Linux diplay I've ever seen... And sound works, too. I could never get Kanotix's sound to work on a laptop.

From that point, I did the install and it worked fine. Way to go, Kano. Thanks for your help.

Cheers, Andy

Er, dude, maybe you didn't read my message closely enough... Your suggestion did work, and beautifully---I'm enjoying the best Linux experience ever.

I posted all that code from my previous failures, just in case it might show something interesting or useful to you. Sorry for the confusion, and thanks again for the help.
