Titel: New to linux- how to instal to usb drive.  BeitragVerfasst am: 09.04.2008, 16:14 Uhr

Hi I am a total technonumptie and have very little experience of linux distros. I have managed to download and run the Kanotix 2007 Thorhammer RC7 from a cd . I am pretty impressed with it so far . I have tried Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon which was pretty neat but had some problems . My knowledge of command line instructions is limited but I am a reasonably fast learner as long as I am given idiot proof directions .

I'm wanting to put Kanotix on to a 8Gb Emtec Giga Cube portable drive . I'd like to have a persistent home-directory on the drive . So that I can load applications and keep some folders and files just like a normal os . I want to be able to boot into Kanotix on the drive from any pc that I may be using .

I looked around for info on this but all the stuff I found seems to be for older versions . So me questions are .

Is what I ask possible ?

Can anyone help ?

I am running a thread over at PC Review detailing my experiences with Kanotix . Any observations on this would be most welcome .

You can do a "normal" hd install on usb - most easy way is when you disconnect local hds for install - or you have to use reorder mode in the AcritoxInstaller (in Kanotix Menu). Best ask in IRC.

Hi Kano , thanks for the reply . I'll try to install with the local hds disconected as I have a pc part built .
I have never used IRC so I'll give that a miss for now .

One question though , will Thorhammer RC7 run on a pc with a AMD Athalon XP 1800 cpu , I tried to load the cd on such a pc and it started to load with the prety coloured command scripts . Got to the screen that looks like the desktop telling you it was installing and went on but then ended up with unredable graphics on the screen .From what I could make out it looked like a desktop . It did look as though it had partly loaded so maybe it was something to do with the graphics . It's funny that everything looked ok and then ended up scrambled .

I'm not sure what the graphics card is as it is a friends pc . The monitor was a old CRT . Will Thorhammer work on Athalon XP cpu's ??

Back to my original query .

I tried to run the cd with my hard drives disconnected but it would not load at all . I tried several times and it would not work .

So I re-connected my hard disc drives and ran the cd . I tried to use Acritox Installer but I could not get the usb drive to show in the section where it asks you to choose which partition to boot from .

I found this guide ,

http://www.pendrivelinux.com/2007/02/20 ... ing-linux/

and thought I might be able to use it but I kept getting stuck at step 16 . Oh well nothing ventured and all that .

I did learn how to set the usb drive as " /dev/sdb " . This did show up in the AcritoxInstaller and I was able to load the CD/OS on to the usb drive . So I now have the Kanotix loaded and running on my usb drive and it seems to work on the pc that I used to load it of . It is keeping the changes I make and seems to be acting just like a hard drive . So I'm quite pleased , not too bad for a beginner .

However I tried to use the usb drive in another pc and it does seem to start to load . Funny thing is it shows the partitions from the other pc at the boot up screen . I choose the Kanotix option and it starts to load , runs quite a way through and then gets stuck , see the pic I uploaded . The Kanotix shuts down in a very neat and ordered way . I'm nearly there but just not quite up and running smoothly . So it looks like I only have a partial sucess .

Still I'm learning a lot . Any ideas as to what I can try next would be most welcome .

Thanks .

I guess you connected the hd install to the wrong pc, so you did not get an X server. HD installs dont use autodetection. Well you can login as root in that case and run knxcc to redetect gfx card.

Thanks for the reply , but I have no idea what it means .

I have 2 pc's . PC1 and PC2. The Live CD works just fine on both pc's .

I used PC1 along with the Live CD to mount the Kanotix OS to a USB Mini hard drive . This seemed to work ok on PC1 .

I took the USB Mini hard drive to PC2 and it does seem to start to load . Funny thing is it shows the partitions from PC1 at the boot up screen . I choose the Kanotix option and it starts to load , runs quite a way through and then gets stuck , see the pic I uploaded . The Kanotix shuts down in a very neat and ordered way . I'm nearly there but just not quite up and running smoothly . So it looks like I only have a partial sucess .

Hope this clarifies things a little . I know problem solving on line is difficult and appreciate your efforts . Thanks .

You can only use vesa xserver if your gfx cards are too different.

Thanks again for your reply but once again I do not understand what you are saying . I do not have any graphics problems with the two pc's I am working with .
It seems that I may not be outlining my problem clearly . As I do not wish to waste your time I am going to drop this part of my project and concentrate on other aspects of it .
Thanks again .

Well you do not understand: in Live mode the gfx card is autodetected. After HD install the autodetection is not used. Therefore you can not switch the hd and see always a pic on the screen. This would only work when you use Driver "vesa" or Driver "fbdev" (but then without DefaultColorDepth) in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf instead of the "correct" Driver - or you change it. That's the only reason why X does not start here.

If you've installed Kanotix to a hard disk, even a removable one, you can't move it from one computer with one set of hardware to another computer with a completely different set of hardware and expect it to work. (Unless PC #1 is exactly like PC #2.)

That's what the Kanotix live CD is for - it has autodetection routines that will detect your PC's hardware, including which type of graphics card you have; your HDD's partition layout; your network connection (e.g. wireless vs. Ethernet); etc.

But once you've installed Kanotix on a hard drive, even a removable one, you'll have to manually configure it to make it work with a different computer - unless it's exactly like the first one - because a hard drive install doesn't have the autodetection routines.

In any case, I installed Kanotix to an external hard drive that connects via USB. (I used gparted to partition it before running the installer.) Here are the three relevant screens from the installer to make it work. Note that the installer recognized the external drive as "hdc".

Thanks Kano and eco2geek for your replies .

I have a better idea of what I am doing now thanks to the information you have both given . So I am going to wipe the usb disk drive and start afresh . I'll let you know how I get on .

Thanks again .
