I just thought I shall ask about something I wonder about a long time. When I do a "Restart computer" in Linux the shutdown goes much faster than if I do a "Turn of computer", then it must be so that Linux system shuts down in a different way if it expects to be restarted? Is that so?
I have a multiple boot system booting my computer with a non Linux bootmanager.
I sometimes do a Restart from Kanotix and then boot into WinXp (for having ntfs write support or gaming) and after that I turn of the computer from WinXp. Whats happened then is that from the Linux systems point of view I turned of the computer with the fast shutdown for rebooting but in reality I turned of the computer. Is this a problem? |

Your 1st q: yes does not empty swap only hanging swap out. does not reread the crontabs for outstanding jobs and only suspend running cronjobs.
Hardshutdown does rerad cronjobs and sets the new starttimes for outstanding jobs, running cronjobs are not interupted, swap is cleaned.
2nd q: no no problem if pc is turnd off with XP, while before Linux has the reboot done. Next time Linux starts as usual. |
