Wohnort: stupid american :)
essentially i get this endlessly in dmesg

ata3.00: speed down requested but no transfer mode left
ata3.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen
ata3.00: (irq_stat 0x48000000, interface fatal error)
ata3.00: tag 0 cmd 0xa0 Emask 0x50 stat 0x51 err 0x24 (ATA bus error)
ata3: soft resetting port
ata3: SATA link up 1.5 Gbps (SStatus 113 SControl 300)
ata3.00: configured for PIO0
ata3: EH complete

this error message will continue forever,,, any ideas what this is or how I could learn more about it so I can fix it? I know this is a Sata Bus issue,, perhaps you could tell me the name of the sata driver so i can look for an update. anyone else have similar problems?

Research suggest this is a kernel thing,,, I guess i will just have to wait for a new libata in the next kernel. 2.6.20 shows promise; but we will see. I'f you come across this problem, lemme know.

This causes weird problems (system hangs, X crashes, suddenly no more write access to /dev/sda1,...).

I posted the full history (in German) here:
http://kanotix.com/index.php?name=PNphp ... 141#154141

Could you solve your issue??

Regards

Did you try to update to 2.6.22?

get -N http://kanotix.com/files/kernel/kernel- ... ack.tar.gz
unp kernel-update-pack.tar.gz
cd kernel-update-pack
./install.sh

Did you try to update to 2.6.22?

Now I updated the kernel and first it booted successfully.
But soon I got SATA-errors again and the system hang again.

Before it died I could save dmesg:

Is there anything to trace what causes the troubles?

Due to necessary hard resets the / file system on /dev/sda1 seems to got damaged.
I have ? in several files when I list them in a console. I have already done fsck and it did repair some inconsistencys. Now it says "clean".

But still it is not booting anymore and terminates with

[....]
run-init: /sbin/init: permission denied....
kernel-panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!

So I did some more research and I found that ohters faced this SATA-Error due to a faulty cable connection. So I checked my SATA cable (there was nothing obviously wrong) but then I pluged it over from port 1 to port 2 on the mainboard.

Then I started with Kanotix live CD again and did some mounting and writing tests on /dev/sda and all worked without errors so far.

Therefore I decided to do a clean reinstall of Kanotix and try again.

I will get back here with the results.

Thanks for attention

Clean install successfully finished.

No more SATA/ATA errors in dmesg

It seams that the trouble has been caused by bad cable connection. (in fact SATA connectors are a bit loose indeed (no really snap in))

----------------------------------------
Edit:
This morning, the system did not start again and again I fixed it by re-plugging SATA and power cabe at the HD.

So it seems to be really a HW problem

Its also possible you have a bad port on your SATA controller as I had that sort of error happen to me as well. Also a good idea to make sure your cables are good quality and also ensure they are firmly plugged into the drive and the controller. If you are using a PCI SATA card, make sure its firmly seated in the slot, as you can get spurious errors if it is loose.

Indeed, since I have checked and replugged both cable connection (power and data) there were no problems anymore. (the SATA connectors are on-board - no PCI)
As this is my first computer with SATA drives I have learned to check the cables and all plugs when a strange error turns up.

(I might have triggered the problem when I installed a new DVD drive a few days before. Perhaps in doing so I might have touched the SATA cables and the plugs slipped a little loose....)

Personally, I am not really happy with the design of SATA connectors as both power and data plug have no lock or snap-in feature and the contacts are so tiny so it is quite a mechanical issue .....

Agreed, fremder. The mobo sata connectors are fragile and also can snap off if you get too forceful. Seems the cables ought to be redesigned with some sort of snap to keep them in place.
