Hardware - Laptop often hangs when KDE session ends

This is a Presario V2610 with a Sempron 3000+ and an ATI Radeon Xpress 200M chipset, with a 768x1280 screen, running kanotix-2006-easter-rc4 dist-upgraded to current and kernel 2.6.17.7, with the ATI fgrlx drivers.

I'm not sure why, but the laptop often (not always) hangs to hardware reset when switching out of KDE into kdm. It's also hung after the monitor power control turned the screen off. There doesn't seem to be any pattern to it, but it seems to happen less often if I reinstall the fgrlx drivers after every dist-upgrade.

Anyone have experience with this? It's getting quite annoying.

Hope there will be light at the end of the tunnel after AMD completes its buy of ATI and that AMD opens up the ATI specs a bit more to allow better drivers to be written.

I had the same problem. Maybe you can try this:

Open the file /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc and find the expression #TerminateServer=true. Remove the # oder add TerminateServer=true in the section [X-:*-Core]

Eisbrecher78, that may have just done the trick, without having to comment out the glx module and "RenderAccel" in xorg.conf. Will let you know how it goes long-term. Danke für Ihre Hilfe.
