General Support - after Adept package update, usb mouse/keyboard dont work nitto - 10.08.2006, 23:57 Uhr Titel: after Adept package update, usb mouse/keyboard dont work
I did an Adept upgrade and installed few new files. But after a reboot, I can't get my usb mouse/keyboard to work at all!!
I'm back to the liveCD now (easter rc4)...
Is there a fix for this?
OR maybe just do a reinstall (again!!@@!)
thanks

yes, don't use adept or synaptic to do upgrades, unless you want your system broke. Use apt, that's the tool for the job, log out of x/kde, login to console/terminal mode, init 3, then run apt. If you don't want to do that, dont do upgrades. If you don't want to reinstall again, then think about reading up on this stuff before you break your system, not after, that tends to help.

It sounds kind of harsh, but its an old story here.
And even though adept is on the CD, it is best used for simple installs.
Synaptic is better, IMO, but they are both really best used for looking up information.
The best way to dist-upgrade is as h2 indicated.
Don't feel bad about re-installing. I learned a lot from my first 5 installs of SuSE 7.2.
Didn't know how to fix anything, just reinstall everything. And then from the next 5 installs of Mandrake, then the next 5 installs of Mepis, then the next 5 installs of Kanotix.

well, learning the hard way.... as seems to happen with linux
now reinstalled and working again as good as new...
I was more then happy to see that all my installed files/programs etc were just as I left it! :->
I don't mind doing 5+ reinstalls :-> but getting good advice wtih arrogant tones is goingto get more getting used to!
just a sound advice from a newbie: you don't like to help or tired of it.... don't!
nevertheless, thanks

nitto, when I first came here to this forum I saw responses like that.
It is more of a dialect thing. Some cultures are more "direct" or succinct with their answers than others.
I find myself answering like h2 did on other forums and then being surprised when people say I was rude. It really shouldn't been seen that way.
BTW, I use synaptic for every upgrade possible but have had to use apt or dpkg to pull myself out of a mess before as well - usually a mess that others using strictly apt got as well.
Adept on the other hand is very new for Debian and I would not touch that except for simple installs. I find that it have an extremely nice and user friendly interface but gives you too little information for upgrades or dist-upgrades.

nitto, reading up on this stuff, asking first, etc, really does help. It's how you learn, well, breaking stuff is also how you learn, I do that fairly often though the more I read and ask, the less I break stuff, that took me a while to learn. If you search the forums for adept the first thing you will find is threads warning against using it for upgrades. It takes a while to learn this, but that's part of the learning curve of linux I think is learning how to learn.
