Software - Where is KDE's print manager list of printer? al3 - 27.08.2006, 03:24 Uhr Titel: Where is KDE's print manager list of printer?
I bought a new HP printer but (of course) I don't see it in the KDE printer manager (or CUPS) list of choices when I try to add it to the system.
What has to be updated? Is it a foomatic package? A cups package? Where does KDE or CUPS find the list of printers it knows about.
Thanks,
Al

I tend to use the Control Centre to add a printer
Control Centre>Periphs>printers then the button that says "add printer"
A wizard then appears and its just a matter of choosing the options that are best for you
Check that 'hplip' is installed too, may help you out.

This is the same as the KDE Print-manager... just accessed a less direct way. I'm trying to get an updated list of printers since my verison of KDE is almost 8 months old. KDE uses some package that has the list of printers and what drivers should be assigned to them (hplip, hpjls, etc.). Where is that list? I think it's a foomatic file... but don't know which one.

After a few hours cogitating.. looking at various files in all sorts of places, which yielded nothing. I thought, ha! , to get up a list of printers just "add" printer,, it will bring up a list of manufactures and their drivers.
The wizard will bring them up after you choose where the printer is
If you dont like what you see. just cancel
Hmmmmmmmmmm you are already doing that.. try it via Control Centre..i will post again with a list of other printing packages

apt-get install cupsys cupsys-driver-gutenprint hplip
Maybe all it needs is a /etc/init.d/cupsys restart
There is some other printing help here

Why not use the interface preferred by the printing gods?

I don't think I made myself clear. I can add a printer. BUT the printer I want to add is NOT on the list in either the cups 631 page or the KDE printer manager (just a front-end to CUPS). Where can I get an updated list of printers. New printers come out every month. How do they get added to the list?
Note, I'm sure I can pick a comparalbe printer.. I could choose hP 3100 (listed) for the HP 3180 (not listed) and it will (may?) work, but I'm curious as to how this list gets renewed.

While not directly on on point, you may want to have a look here:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi
Recently, a friend needed a driver installed for a Lexmark printer and I used Linux Printing as the starting point for my exploration.

Hi, al3,
(each of which is available via apt-get). I know that my HP Laser Jet is one of the few not listed when I do a new installation, but it shows up once hplip-ppds is installed.
Hope that helps!

My HP photosmart 8450 isn't listed either, but it seems to work fine with the 8400 hpijs driver - taken directly from the cups/kde list.
The only problem I had was getting my system to be able to talk to the embedded web server.
Otherwise it's fine.
If you google for hplip, theres a list of supported printers there. Most HP devices are supported, as are most Epson.
