General Support - GRUB on Boot

Titel: GRUB on Boot
I've just installed kanotix w/ windows. Here's how it's partitioned:
sda1 - windows
sda2 - kanotix
sda3 - fat32 (Exchange files b/w linux-win)
sda4 - swap
What I did was installed kanotix then installed windows, but windows overwrote GRUB and kanotix wouldn't load.
But, I read the faq on kanotix's website "Bootmanager - GRUB"
I followed what it said and GRUB is now installed, but when I boot up the comp it has no GUI, it says "for the first word TAB lists possible command completions..etc"
What should I do to get GUI back?
Thanks for any advice.

Depending what version of Kanotix you are using
2006-01-RC1
Just put in the Live CD, go to Kmenu > Kanotix -> kanotix installer
and click on Recover an existing Kanotix-HD-Installation and from there just choose MBR
Easter rc4
put in the Live CD, click on the fish -> kanotix installer
and click on Recover an existing Kanotix-HD-Installation and from there just choose MBR
For both
put in the Live CD
mount your kanotix /
then as root
grub-install --root-directory=/media/sda2 /dev/sda

Thanks for the reply piper.
Using the GUI Installer to update caused an error, and grub-install command doesn't have a gui for GRUB at boot. It's alright now, I reformatted it and reinstalled and everything works fine now. But, for some reason skype won't work, due to some sound device problem. But, sound is working fine, as I went to "Control center > sound & Multi > sound systems" and clicked the test buttons and there's sound.
I'm not sure if it's my sound card or the skype install that's not working. Any idea how to fix this or what the problem might be?
Thanks for any help again.

Sorry, back with another problem. After I turned off systemsounds skype works but now i'm not getting any audio output for anything. The person on the other end can hear me though. I'm just not hearing anything I tried to play some mp3s and no audio.
Any solutions?
Thanks!

I'm using the 2006-easter-RC4 preview release installed on HD. Does that have ALSA support?

No. Install skype beta yourself.

Thanks for reply, Kano.
I downloaded the package and tried a few things:
1. double clicking the .deb package.
2. console > root > apt-get install skype
3. console > root > apt-get install skype-beta-1.3.0.37-1_i386.deb
None of these worked.
I tried using adept updater, but it was updating a whole bunch of stuff on debian and got me a bit scared so I canceled it. After, I used console and did
apt-get update
then
apt-get dist-upgrade
I'm not sure if this is the same as what adept is doing, but it's downloading and installing heck of a lot of packages at the moment. I'm just doing this for experimental/knowledge purposes.
I'm in the process of downloading 2006-02-RC1 and going to do an update-install once it's done to fix the skype problem and hopefully whatever problems after apt-get distro-upgrate might cause.
But, for general purposes I want to know why the apt-get install and other things i tried on the console didn't work?
Did I type the command wrong or is it something else?
Also, what does the apt-get dist-upgrade do and if it's the same as what the adept updater did?
I'm new to linux and this is a good oppurtunity to learn something so anyone with any explanations please elaborate.
Thanks.

Once you have a downloaded .deb file, let's say to /home/anticapitalista/downloads
you then have to type this in a console, as root
cd name_of_directory
dpkg -i name_of_app.deb
eg cd /home/anticapitalista/downloads
dpkg -i skype-beta-1.3.0.37-1_i386.deb
Another way is to single left-click on the downloaded .deb file and kpackage should automatically install it.

Another little tip is once you've changed to the directory where the .deb file is and you've typed "dpkg -i", type the first letter of the package name and hit the TAB key. You'll find it will autocomplete the name of the package.
