there is a lot of action in Kanotix-country!
Did an update install of RC1 to RC 2 - no problem. Automounting of CD ok, tab for keyboard layout in K-controlcenter ok
In order to install my HPLaserjet 1100 - parallel printer - I had to do the "apt-get --purge remove cupsys etc " procedure. After that printing ok
Changing the destdir for VDR-recording - I had problems previously, but possibly my fault - without any problems now.
As far as I am concerned Kano and crew could use the RC2 as final with the possible exception that installing the printer may be difficult for people not familiar with the forum....does, in my hands, not work straight away with the relevant gui.
It is really fun to use KANOTIX and learn more about linux every day (and night)

Titel: RE: Contributed Bug List for KANOTIX-2006-01-RC2
just ran rc2 in vmware :
GRUB Errors:
trying to select a resoltuion in grub causes grub to hang!
language and splash selection works fine. though, opnening the language and splash menu several times causes the VM to crash:
Code:
*** Virtual machine kernel stack fault (hardware reset) ***
The virtual machine just suffered a stack fault in kernel mode. On a real computer, this would amount to a reset of the processor. It can be caused by an incorrect configuration of the virtual machine, a bug in the operating system, or a problem in the VMware Workstation software. Press OK to reboot virtual machine or Cancel to shut it down.
KDE:
Fonts: are still "not best" (not ugly, but not good enough). my settings that give me crystal clear fonts in KDE is "sub pixeling: RGB" and "hinting-style: full". rc2 settings are sub-pixeling disabled and hinting medium.
Trash-Can: there's a trash on the desktop, so i don't need another trash on the lower right on my screen. it makes kanotix look like kubuntu
Installation:
Speedy 8:19 minutes (ISO in a VM). No Problems. GParted works perfectly.
Splashy: splashy turns black after half the boot process. the percentage bar returns quickly, but the background picture stays black. but this is also an issue on my easter rc4 dist-upgraded desktop installation and not in particular an issue with the rc2 live cd.
Everything else i tested worked (couldn't test printer installation though).

The sub pixel are different for TFTs depending on construction. So when I set it to one setting, then 50% of the others will complain.

i see, then it's ok. maybe this should be mentioned somewhere, if it isn't yet.
will the help file that's loaded on kde startup be translated into other languages too? or will it stay english only?

I installed 2006-01-RC1 and then 'apt-get upgrade && apt-get dist-upgrade' to RC2:

It is still not possible to set additional keyboard layouts (slovenian in my case) - I can only switch between [us], [de] and [fr].
BTW, this works in Easter Edition of Kanotix
Thanks, Roman

doknir,
you cannot dist-upgrade to RC2.
you must get the iso or the xdelta-patch from RC1 to RC2 and do update-install from the installer.
if you dont want that, rm -rf /etc/X11/xkb will fix the kbd-layout bug.

ockham23, GRUB doesn't load that far to let me enter "testcd". The last I see on the screen before it cycles is GRUB 1.5. After that the computer shuts down, in old terms a warm boot, I see the BIOS splash screen, and then GRUB again, endlessly repeating until I remove the CDROM.
Edited: I tried again to boot RC2 as a live CD. The very last message I see on the screen is, Grub loading.... Please wait. Then it powers down and comes up again. I am using an EPIA 5000 cpu and VIA chipset with 512 MB of RAM. This little computer has been in constant use for five months and booted everything I have thrown at it. This the first time to have GRUB recycle like this.

I will try to load it on my second computer and get back to you.
Edited: I tried to boot RC2 on the twin computer. It behaved exactly the same way. The other day I booted RC1 without a problem. I will try again with RC3. Thanks ockham23, a good name, by the way. Ockham deserves to be better known.

Then boot your computer off the RC1 LiveCD and append cheat code "fromiso=K*2.iso" to the line of boot commands.

ockham23, thanks for your effort. I don't want to install Kanotix until the release. Presently I am using PC-BSD because it and other versions of FreeBSD connect to the Internet normally and all versions of Linux I've tested take 5 to 10 minutes to connect except for versions of Linux one year old. I get a normal connect with with Mepis 3.3.1 and Knoppix 3.4. I have asked for help on other forums without luck. I guest I will have to solve it myself in time. I had hoped maybe this version of Kanotix would connect normally. I'll try again with RC3.

fuzzybud, I bet this is a Via Rhine network adapter. Via Rhine is known to cause IRQ problems on some computers. Try booting with cheat codes "noapic" or "pci=routeirq". It could also help if you detach some unneeded devices such as USB cameras to free up some interrupts. Installing an "-up" kernel might also help.

This is the third forum I asked for help and you are the first one to offer something solid to investigate. Thanks again.

Bugs that I noticed:
The "ToRAM" boot option in grub has no effect. It works fine in Knoppix 5.01.
The text color for the functions keys (i.e. "F1") in the grub screen makes the text almost totally unreadable. (i.e. You can't see the "F1", "F2")
When you right click on a partition on the desktop such as a NTFS partition, there's no option to change it from read-only to writeable. What's wrong with the way that Knoppix does it? Is ntfs-3g the default way used to mount NTFS partitions? It wasn't clear to me. I would prefer if NTFS volumes are mounted RO by default, but easily switchable to writeable.
I couldn't boot off my 2nd DVD burner. It started booting and made it past the 2 penguin icons (representing each core of the processor), but then when the boot process gets to the part where it searches the devices for a CD/DVD devices, it couldn't find any. Seems kind of ironic that it was already booting off the DVD drive, but then couldn't find the DVD drive that it was booting off of. I think Knoppix has the same problem, but not all distros do.

Maybe it's the spelling; try "toram" instead. If "toram" doesn't work, the next logical step would be to run memtest from the grub menu, then reboot with cheat code "testcd".

Kano, the second ethernet card is on my little VIA EPIA 5000 computer. I added that second card today just to try a different ethernet connection. It didn't work any better than the one on the motherboard. The Rhine 111 is a D-Link DFE-530TX. For several months now in all the new versions of Linux I have tried it takes 5 to 10 minutes before my computer connects to the Internet, not nice. Then if I take the time to write and email or write to a forum it takes another 5 to 10 before the computer connects again to send it. I found that FreeBSD and PC-BSD connect without a problem. Also older versions of Linux connect without a problem. At the moment I am writing to you using Knoppix 3.4 as a live CD. All of this is a different but annoying problem from the one I have been writing about on this threadd. That is that the EPIA 5000 computer can not boot RC2 but did boot RC1. My neighbor has an AMD Athlon XP+ with the via chipset that booted RC2 without a problem. I don't know why the EPIA5000 can't boot RC2.

We started with one issue, now we have two. Number one is grub rebooting with RC2. Assuming the cd is o.k., I can think of only one explanation: the optical drive cannot read CD-ROMs that come very close to the theoretical limit of slightly over 703 MB. You said that you have two Via Epia machines. Are the optical drives identical?
Number two is the network problem. You write you observe erratic behavior only with recent distros. Suspect #1is still IRQ handling. Does booting RC1 with cheat codes "noapic" or "routeirq" improve your network connection? If there's no difference, we should take a closer look at your router. TCP/IP has been updated to ipv6, and the router may not be able to establish a stable link with your computer. Type
Code:
ifconfig

That board works fine with disks under 700MB so I will be careful in the future with that computer. It will be a few weeks before I use it as I love this new computer. I have no doubt that RC3 will boot on my new desktop but I want to see about the connect time to the Internet. Maybe something is different in this new Kanotix. One of the mysteries about the slow connect time is that PC-BSD always connected normally and the new versions of Linux got hung up for that 5 to minutes. Then if I wrote a note like this I would have to wait another 5 to 10 minutes to submit it. I don't know what FreeBSD does differently. Thanks again.

fuzzybud, now that you have at least three computers in your room, you can set up your own router: Connect the Via Epia machine that has to NICs to the router and boot it off the Knoppix 3.4 cd. Then launch the Knoppix Terminal Server from the Knoppix menu. This script will start a DHCP server and activate IP forwarding & masquerading, very similar to Windows Internet Connection Sharing. Set up the second NIC with static IP address 192.168.2.1 and connect your new computer to it with a cross-over patch cable. As a result, all Internet traffic will be routed through the Knoppix machine that has no problems connecting to the Internet.

I thought it might be the eight port D-Link router in my landlady's apartment that connects to the three port router issued by the ISP. We need at least six ports. Now I am not so sure because only my computers have trouble when I use Linux. I like Linux this is not a flame. It is a mystery. I have used Kanotix off and on for two years. if you dont want that, rm -rf /etc/X11/xkb will fix the kbd-layout bug.
Oops!
I did the xdelta-patch to RC2 and it is ok now!
Thx, R.

Ack. I'm sorry. I posted this originally in the "contributed bug list for RC1" postings, but it should have been here! I'll just copy this over, then leave an edit on the old post to that effect...
I tried installing to disk today. Upon running into the separate '/home' partition problem like everyone else (btw: 'Mountpoint' is spelled incorrectly in that warning), I stepped back through the installer to try other things.
When I got (the second time) to the "user" tab, where you input your root password and user's real name, username, and password, the realname and username had been remembered, but the root passwords and user passwords were filled in with 6 stars (whereas my passwords all have considerably more characters than that). I think that people used to the installation might run into more problems than a new user here, because they'll see that their username was remembered, and notice that the password fields are filled in, but might not notice that they're filled with the wrong passwords! I anticipate that could cause a LOT of headaches.

Get rid of that D-Link
and your long delay connecting to the internet will probably go away.
Do you have a long delay connecting to the internet without the router ?
ockham23 has a good idea with linux as a router or pick up something different than the D-link (linksys is far better than a d-link in my opinion)

I will go shopping later today for a different router. My landlady has just returned for a month long vacation so I can finally get into her apartment to make the switch. I will do that tomorrow if all goes well and report back.

ockham23 and piper, delayed connection problem solved thanks to the two of you. Now that I am abe to get into my landlady's apartment I moved my connection to the ISP's router, bypassing the D-Link router. Now my new computer and my epia 5000 connect to the Internet using Kanotix. This has been a long nagging problem. The answer is to not use D-Link routers. One day I will understand why PC-BSD worked and Linux didn't. Right now I will install Kanotix and dual boot it with PC-BSD.
