Quote from another thread regarding held back packages :

Zitat:
The following packages have been kept back:
dpkg-dev idle python python-minimal rdiff-backup streamtuner
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 6 not upgraded.

I d-u most days; my list of held packages is growing :

checkinstall
gkrellm
hal-device-manager
libggi2
pdftk

Do others have these packages held back? Should I force their installation or just leave things as they are?

<slightly hijacking your thread>
How come the list of packages to be held back keeps changing? How come it does not always coincide with what "dpkg --get-selections | grep hold" tells me?

I often do a "apt-get install packagename" for packages that are held back for more information as to why they are held back. Sometimes it is because of a conflict or dependency that cannot be resolved. But often they just need to remove and/or install a new package. And I can then decide whether I want to do so.

All were dependency issues which I've resolved by uninstalling / reinstalling.
