It looks like Microsoft's making a PR move, and will have tools available that allow users to work with Open Document Format files.
There are many news stories breaking on this development Here is one of them:

Hehe, nice move.
We all remember, that first there existed a really free and open document format, supported by everybody, wanted and accepted by everybody - except M$. Then M$ tried to overrun this new format with it's own half-open (they say "improved") document format. As always, they managed to find a hand full of corporate friends to support them, but unfortunately several governments and other big players did not trust M$ any more. They demand and will use only a fully open and convertible format in the future.
After that it was silent for some weeks about M$ and open document formats. Recently an open source project announced a plug-in for M$ Office that would enable it to hande the real open document format. Hell, that was bad news for M$, because it was not under their control!
What you posted now is their helpless last try to turn control over back to themselves again by sponsoring an open source project (under their control and not GPL license) which would develop a plagiat of the already existing plug-in. Why? Because "only big corporations are able to produce well tested and stable software and usefull documentation". Well, that's how we know them since many years, producing the most stable, best tested and perfect documented software in the world.
As far as I can see M$ get's into trouble more and more. They have lost stock value, consumer trust, sympathy and leadership over the last years. No wonder Billy steps back - rats always leave a sinking ship first.
Greetings,
Chris |
