I am trying to boot knoppix-2005-64-lite.iso on an AMD64 box,
system sort of hangs after starting x-wondows. I would like to see
if the boot will complete, so, is there a way to boot the iso image without graphics (cheatcode)?

Yes -- put the number 3 at the end of your boot line and it should come up in level 3
