I could not say that the Kanotix kernel works in Elive since I've never tried it. I can however say that the Kanotix kernels work fine in Debian. For that matter the Kanotix repository will also work just fine with a Debian installation.

Might I make a suggestion? Instead of installing Elive (which is quite outdated w/ 2.6.12 kernel & Xorg 6.9 & doesn't work on SATA drives) why not just add E17 to Kanotix? There is a Howto and it's very simple.

Thanks! First I try kanotix kernel to mine Elive 0.5 pre stable installation. But that E17 on kanotix sounds much better. I think I'll buy some ice cold beers and install kano with E17 at weekend.

You might not get through the first beer before kanotix is installed. It's that fast and easy. Don't know about E17, though. Never messed with it.

I use straight debian and use some of the kanotix packages (never had a desire for the kernel since I usually recompile mine to remove hardware - and add bootsplash - not add it.)

I've heard that the kanotix graphics install scripts work of debian sid. What kanotix packages do you use on debian jackiebrown? ... all of them work?

Swynndla:
If a single Kanotix package or script would not work on Debian Sid we would consider that a serious bug. Kanotix enriches Debian Sid - it does not change it, or stop it's ongoing flow of development by freezing and backporting (that's what other distributions do).
The kernel is a different story. In oder to support much a lot more and some bleeding edge hardware Kanotix does not use Debian kernels. Kanotix kernels are most recent Vanilla Linux kernels with a bunch of important patches added.
Greetings,
Chris

slam, very interesting, thanks. I guess it goes to show that kanotix isn't just based on debian, it is debian.

On one of my pc's, I've installed debian sid via a net install dialy snapshot. In most respects, I personally like that install better than installing off the kanotix live cd. But if I wanted to use a kanotix kernel, it's good to know that I can (not that I have any bleeding edge hardware). It's good to know that I can use the kanotix apt sources too. I didn't think I'd be allowed.

Exactly! It's a mystery to me that others do not see the advantage here. You get all the goodness of Debian with a very simple installer & live cd capabilities. Unlike another Debian wannabe that creates its own packages and can't even manage to maintain compatibility from one release to the next within itself. That makes no sense. It is obviously possible to build custom packages and yet maintain compatibility with Debian.

The nvidia script most certainly does work with a standard Debian installation. I have used it on many occasions. The ATI script I would assume works but I have not personally tested it.

I thought I'd try using a Kanotix kernel (2.6.17.13-slh-up-1) on Mepis 3.4.3 and it works and it works well.
The nvidia script doesn't though, neither does mod assistant to produce a nvidia-kernel (It doesn't work in kanotix either).
I'll try it out on my debian net-install

There are 3 ways (that I'm aware of) to install nvidia drivers to Debian.
Kano's script, the Debian way and the installer from nvidia. All 3 ways work on Debian. My personal experience is that using one way and then another results in some 'interesting' issues. I haven't had the desire or ambition to look very deep into the issue. I just use the script.
