Yes, reading John Barlow's views really showed how far out of touch the industry is with realilty.
Despite having basically allowed any recording of any show they ever did to be freely distributed, somehow or other the Grateful Dead managed in many years to be the world's top grossing touring band.
They were far ahead of the curve in terms of what is now called file trading, by the way, and the band always encouraged it, since it's about the music, and the trading successfully built generation after generation of new fans.
Other bands that followed this route saw similar success, like Ween. Then you have the motion picture/ recording industry's take on this question....
What's especially interesting in this side by side interview is actually quite surreal, Glickman goes on and on about how you can't make a living off file trading and free music, but there, right next to him, in the next shot, is a guy who did just that, and continues to do it. For 35 years, almost 40 now.
For those who don't follow such things, Dead fans were among the very earliest internet adopters, using bulliten boards etc to communicate before many of you were even born. And they were among the first to start trading online with lossless compressed formats like shn.
And despite this, they all made not just good, but great livings. And they kept the entire dead family employed too, roadies, sound engineers, ticket sales, etc.
Of course, what else can the recording industry say? Their job is to create garbage and make money off it. If now and then someone comes along that isn't junk, that's nice, but it's not a core component of their business model. |

I heard that Brittney Spears released her entire music collection as a free download and still no one wanted it. |
