I've always wondered if this is possible. A £50 'tax' on a new PC is very annoying but hopefully this will set the precedent for others to push their case. It certainly makes the cost of laptops look more reasonable!

I have been searching for an inexpensive laptop that I could put linux on. I have found a few business class ones without an os but they start around $1500. I have found some with Linux already installed but again these are 'specialty' laptops and also cost in excess of $1500. I have found many on sale (all with windows preinstalled) for anywhere between $399 and $899. I have asked customer service of different places and they say it is due to a licensing agreement with microsoft that they cannot sell a laptop without windows. It seems that MS has it both ways. They get there money whether their product is used or not. I will probably end up buying one from HP with windows for under $500 and then dump windows and install kanotix. I get a computer I can afford and MS gets their money. Wrong and sad that it has to be this way. But remember, Microsoft is not a monopoly, yeah right.
