          | Kanotix is working flawlessly on my new-to-me Dell Dimension E520 . . . except for sound. From poking around the forum, I see I am not alone in that. I tried the suggestions I found under Hardware, with no error messages, but still no sound. I have some sort of Intel sound card. I'm not opposed to just buying a new sound card, if that is the easiest and quickest way of getting sound to work. If I go that route, is there any particular card, brand, or type that you would recommend as being highly likely to work? Thanks. |

          | Most easy way: disable onboard soundcard and use the cheapest USB soundcard you can find. Usually those work fine. |

          | Thanks. And now to really embarrass myself: I've never heard of a USB sound card. Is that internal, or does it plug into a USB port on the outside? Is a PCI sound card likely to work (I see those for a pittance on Newegg)? And how do I disable the existing sound card? |

          | Older PCI soundcards are most likely to work. If you can get a cheap soundblaster (best with emu10k chip) you will be fine too. USB is of course external, but very small. |

Post lspci -nn so then a dev or any user can help you better in troubleshooting the sound issues. IMO, onboard sound's generally a crapshoot so its best to disable it and get a PCI or USB soundcard. |

Thanks for the advice. I'm going to order the new sound card soon, along with a floppy drive and serial port.

Take a look at the BIOS of your DELL, there must be an option for.

To enter the BIOS have a fast look, when your computer starts. Usually there is something displayed like 'Hit <del> to enter setup' (may also be a function key). |

I was able easily to disable on-board sound, as soon as I entered the BIOS.

But a sound card with emu10k chipset turned out to be difficult to find. I discovered that the Sound Blaster Live PCI 512 has it. Even found one for sale on an out-of-state craigslist. Before going that route, I took a chance on a commercially-available, generic-looking sound card. It worked great, so in case it helps anyone else, here it is: It is a C-Media CMI8768 eight-channel PCI sound card. From newegg.com, it is part number CL-S8768-8. $13.99.

I just plugged it into the PCI slot, turned on the computer, plugged in the speakers, and off I went with sound.

Thanks for the help. |
