"We have a million kids in the state of Indiana," he continued. "If we were to pay $100 for software on each machine, each year, that's $100 million for software. That's well beyond our ability. That's why open source is so attractive. We can cut those costs down to $5 [on each computer] per year."

michael7 - Please stop linking to nonsense like this! It is a well known fact that you must be a nuclear physicist to use Linux. Certainly teenagers (that frequently do not know left from right or even what day it is) are not able to use something as complicated as Linux. Furthermore Linux is extremely expensive to use compared to Windows. Obviously free costs more than not-free. I should know, I read an ad about it from Microsoft on a Linux news site and they have only our best interest at heart. (Bill is a philanthropist afterall). This article is little more than a thinly veiled attempt to spread FUD about the ever-secure Windows platform written by communist Linux hackers from Russia. |

But if children learn Linux first what will happen to poor struggling Microshaft? They have to be protected, the poor dears. This is as bad as the $100 pc. How dare they promote this evil socialist enterprise? Can we stand by and let poor people have free computing when there's community minded fascists working in our interests? |

With the present administration continuing to cut Federal funding for public education and social programs, we'll see more and more of this as state and local governments in this country seek cheaper ways to deliver services. I work for state government and in my department alone, we could save more than $250,000 each year by replacing MS Office with Open Office on desktop computers. When I submitted such a proposal to the state's IT department, those MS zombies flicked me off like a piece of lint on a dark shirt. I suspect, however, that I will get the last laugh. |
