G'day
This got to have such a simple answer, I'll end up pulling my hair!!
I can't seem to get my KWord and/or Openoffice write to do a spell check.
Clicking the spelling icon in KWord just doesn't do anything at all and Openoffice gives spelling complete sign with no change as soon as I click on spelling (and spelling errors are everywhere!!)
any help?
ps. the documents I tried to modify and spell check were MS Word documents in rtf and doc format, neither of the word processing programs had much trouble opening the files.

KWord still doesnt do any spell check at all and I couldn't figure out why yet but OpenOffice org now seems to work.
It seems, when I open an MS Office Word document and modify it, openoffice wont do any spell check on it.
Only after copy-paste'ing into a new openoffice document, the spell check works!
go figure? |

Characters have a language property in OOo.
When they come in new from MsOff it is not set.
Highlight the text, right click, choose Character, then set Language property.
Caveat: If the font of the text is not actually installed, it won't spellcheck.
If the dictionary is not included in dictionary.lst, it won't work.
Yes it's a pain, but getting better. |

Kword does a spell check. Make sure you have it set in kcontrol |

Yea I think I did:
apt-get install ispell iamerican ibritish
and then in Control Center > KDE Components > Spell Checker ... I chose ispell
... or something like that. |

Same problem persists on KWord... pitty I can't seem to use it 'cause it seemed pretty good word package too!
I set the Dictionary in Kcontrol as ISpell Default, Encoding ISO 8859-15 and Client as International Ispell. Also the two tick boxes on top were also ticked too...
Still when I click on the spell check icon or tools->spellchek in KWord, nothing happens |

As for OO writer, under Tools > Options > Language Settings > Languages > Default languages for documents > Western ... I changed the drop-down box to a language that had a tick next to it (install one of the "myspell" apps if you need one to have a tick), and now it auto checks every time. |
