Hi,
I have this strange problem. It all started about two weeks ago. Sometimes my X freeze and I cannot do nothing. I can connect to linux using SSH or samba but connection is very slow. Only thing I get to the log is: X server terminated unexpectedly. Sometimes it just close the X session and Im in the KDM window.
Mostly this happend when linux was up about 2-8 hours. I did everything. H2 fixes script, updated distro, updated kernel.....
Finally I found that if I dont use nvidia drivers my system wont fall. So there have to be something wrong in Nvidia drivers. Does anyone else have similar problems? My nvidia card is: GeForce 4 MX 440 |

I installed nvidia using "install-nvidia-debian.sh" last monday. So Im not sure about version. Now I dont have nvidia drivers anymore and everything works like it should be. |

I haven't had this problem in Kanotix (maybe it's because I have an FX 5500 installed now), but back in the day when I was running my dual monitors with two MX 440s in Suse I would run into the same problem depending on what version of Nvidia drivers Suse would install (I used to install alot when learning & part of the install was that Suse could fetch the latest Nvidia drivers it had in it's Yast repos). Whenever it happened, I would go to the Nvidia site & try older drivers untill I found one that was stable.
If this didn't start happening until after you updated your system/nvidia drivers, you might want to try installing an older driver. You can get the IA32 drivers from Nvidia here:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_archive.html
As devil said your card is a bit old (so is my FX 5500 now), but if it still does what you want you might be able to find one of the older drivers to make it stable instead of spending money on a newer video card. If that doesn't work, I just did a quick google and found the FX 5500 I bought over a year and a half ago for about $160 going for $54 now....So a newer video card might be another option to look at if all else fails.
One other thing to check is see if your video card has a fan on it (depending on which company released the card with the nvidia chip...I had one AGP & one PCI installed. One of them had a fan if I remember correctly). The fan might have stopped working or be filled with so much dust that it is overheating & crashing after a few hours.
Hope this helps |

no need to go to nvidia site for older drivers. you can choose them in the nvidia-script.

Nvidia lists what cards are supported in each driver version. Most new versions have apparently dropped support for older cards so it's best to check the Products Supported list in each driver version to find the one that DOES support your particular legacy card. |
